the silver river
a film by Mady Piesold & Uranchimeg Bayarsaikhan
The silver river tells the story of our journey through Mongolia. We, two female documentary filmmakers from Berlin, experience visiting nomadic living families in the grasslands, as well as the rapidly expanding metropolis of Ulanbaatar, and the effects of a globalised economy. Consequences are obvious not only in the mining area of Zaamar, where the use of mercury gives the River Tool a metallic shine.
We get together with local people who tell us about the nomadic way of life in the face of the 21st century, and we also interview experts in regards to current mining practices and its sprawling effects. This documentary spans our horizon further and extends our view on a world, where the serenity of just being meets with the free-market mechanisms of economic policies and politics.
